Smith River, CA – Today the Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation enacted an emergency response budget that focuses on responding to Tribal Member needs as a result of economic impacts from the global COVID-19 pandemic.
Activated by the Tribal Council’s emergency declaration, the Nation’s Incident Management Team developed a proposal based on the survey responses of over 100 Tribal Members. The highest need was related to economic aid in the form of financial assistance, followed by access to food, basic sanitary supplies, and Personal Protective Equipment. The Tribal Council has prioritized its allocation of COVID-19 resources in a way that attempts to assist in reducing stress to Tribal Member families due to the impacts of COVID-19. Over 70 Tribal Members have been recorded to have either been laid off or experienced reduced hours in employment as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Tribal representatives have begun performing delivery services and have made over 50 deliveries in the last week to the Smith River area.
In an effort to assist all Tribal Members, phase one of the Emergency Response Budget will provide some sort of assistance to all Tribal Members. The response consists of:
• A $100 food debit card to every enrolled Tribal Member 18 and older, tribal-wide.
• Emergency food boxes, household, sanitizing supplies, & masks, (based on supply availability) delivered at least bi-weekly to Tribal Member households in the 5-County Service Area.
• Emergency rent/mortgage assistance, up to $750 for 125 households based on need in the 5- County Service Area.
• Financial assistance to families in tribally-owned housing, by reducing all rent in May to $100/month.
Under the leadership of the Tribal Council, the Incident Management Team is working with available Tribal personnel to anticipate and address any issues that may arise as a consequence of this crisis.
