Sunday ~ August 11th ~ 1:00pm – 4:00pm
The Tolowa Coast is the ancestral land of the indigenous Tolowa Dee-ni’ (The People). Numbering in the thousands before European settlement, a series of massacres, forced relocations, and disease reduced the population to only 200. Tribal psychologist and ethno-historian Dr. Joseph Giovannetti will present a powerpoint talk about the 19th Century colonization of the Tolowa Dee-ni’, the removals and four major massacres, and their recent recovery and revival. This sensitive material may be disturbing to hear. A field trip to a site of special significance follows. Pre-registration is required as space is limited.
Dr. Joseph Giovannetti is a retired professor of Native American Studies from Humboldt State University, a Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation Tribal Council member, Tolowa Dancer and Singer.
