Tolowa Youth Language Camp August 16-18, 2017
Camper Applications are now available. Please return them by Friday July 29th
At the suggestion of Loren Bommelyn I am writing the Waa-tr’vslh-‘a (Culture) Department Director regarding filming during the upcoming Language Camp. I understand that Loren has already talked with him about my project.
I am completing a film about the Tolowa Tribe’s long battle for recognition. My first filming trip included scenes of Loren as a student of Bernice Humpreys and Amelia Brown. I also filmed him teaching his first classes at Crescent City High School, and at his family fish camp.
Loren is a major fixture in my film, and I would like to conclude it by showing him teaching kids at your Language Camp and talking with him about his life’s work.
The film will be premiered at Humboldt State and on PBS station KEET, Eureka. Later it will be shown on PBS stations in California and nation-wide. I think it will be a good example for other tribes , and for the general public of about how one tribe has succeeded. You can see the opening of the film on youtube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjR_2ud-jR0
I look forward to hearing from you.
