NAGPRA Department

The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Program (NAGPRA) is responsible for implementing NAGPRA (Public Law 101-601) and the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) Act (Public Law 101-185), by ensuring that museums and federally funded agencies meet their repatriation compliance responsibilities.

What we’re currently working on:

The NAGPRA Staff are currently working under two National Park Service Grants which has us working with six institutions for the return of various Tolowa cultural items.

Other aspects of NAGPRA compliance include disposition of human remains and cultural items on tribal and federal lands to the Tribe or lineal descendants, and stopping the illegal trafficking of NAGPRA items.

The Tolowa Dee-ni' Nation Cultural Department NAGPRA Office strives for the return of Tolowa Dee-ni’ cultural items--human remains, funerary objects, sacred objects, or objects of cultural patrimony--through communication and consultation with local, state, federal agencies and organizations.
